FROM SERVAL TO SAVANNAH
A REMARKABLE HERITAGE
The Savannah breed originated in the 1980s when a domestic cat was successfully bred with an African Serval (Leptailurus serval). The resulting kittens combined the Serval's striking appearance with the domestic cat's adaptability and affectionate nature.
Through careful and ethical breeding, the Savannah has evolved into a distinctive and much-loved breed, with different generations that reflect their distance from their Serval ancestry.

UNDERSTANDING SAVANNAH GENERATIONS
EACH GENERATION TELLS A STORY
Savannah generations are based on how many generations a cat is from the original Serval. While generation can give an indication of certain traits, every Savannah is an individual, and there can be significant variation in appearance, size and temperament within each generation.
F1
CLOSEST TO THE SERVAL
F1 Savannahs are the first generation, with one Serval parent and one domestic cat parent.
They often (but not always) have exotic appearance, with tall, long-legged builds, large ears and bold markings. F1 Savannahs tend to have strong, confident personalities and high energy levels.
F2
SECOND GENERATION
F2 Savannahs are the result of breeding an F1 Savannah with a domestic cat or another Savannah.
They may still display many exotic features and can be similar in appearance to F1s, although there is more variation. Their temperament is typically a little more settled, while still retaining the Savannah's intelligent and energetic nature.
F3
THIRD GENERATION
F3 Savannahs are one generation further removed from the Serval lineage.
They often have a beautifully exotic appearance, with an incredible blend of wild looks and domestic charm. Many F3 Savannahs are playful, affectionate and highly intelligent, making them wonderful companions for the right homes.
F4
FOURTH GENERATION
F4 Savannahs are becoming more domesticated in lineage, while still retaining the distinctive Savannah look.
They often have a slightly softer appearance, though many still show striking wild features. F4 Savannahs are typically known for their playful, social and affectionate personalities.
F5
FIFTH GENERATION
F5 Savannahs (and beyond) are further removed from the Serval, but still carry the unique beauty and character of the breed.
They often have a more refined appearance, with a wonderful balance of exotic looks and domestic temperament. F5 Savannahs make exceptional family companions, while still retaining the intelligence and playfulness the breed is known for.
